温泉街一帯の建物を見てみましょう。
　赤い屋根に白い回廊を備えた造りになっています。旅館やホテル、雲仙観光局、駐車場管理棟、公衆トイレ、交番などほとんどが同じデザインになっています。
　雲仙地域の建物は、明治後期や大正期外国人の訪問が多かった頃に建てられた雲仙の旅館を見本にしてデザインされています。
　ちなみに、写真は雲仙で最も古い旅館「湯本旅館」の画像です。この旅館には外国人の受け入れのため、おしゃれな回廊がついていました。
☆ 温泉街の全景を見られる絹笠山へ登ってみよう！
温泉街から、約１５分で「風光明媚の白雲の池」へ、そこから約２０分整備された登山道を登ると、「絶景の絹笠山山頂」へ辿りつきす。山頂は整備されており展望台も設置されています。東側の眼下には、赤い屋根に統一デザインされた温泉街が見られ、その先には、雲仙岳の山々が見られます。妙見岳・平成新山・普賢岳・国見岳・野岳。また、梅雨次期には、雲仙市の木に指定されているヤマボウシが見られます。
　ふり返って西側には、千々石湾が見られ、絶景夕陽が見られます、外国人の滞在が多かった明治後期から大正期始めには、人気の登山コースでサンセットヒル（夕日が沈む丘）と呼ばれていました。

Look at the buildings around town. The hotels, the tourist information center, the police box, even the toilets have the same white walls and red roofs. This distinctive style is based on the ryokan, or traditional Japanese inns, that were built in this area during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The buildings were designed to appeal to the turn-of-the-century European ideal of what a resort town was supposed to look like. On your screen is an image of the oldest ryokan in Unzen. The corridor was added to the original ryokan building to impress Westerners who were vacationing in Unzen during the same time period.
