Unzen in early summer. Yamaboshi.
In the Unzen mountains during early summer, the "yamaboshi," a white flowered plant, can be seen. It is visible from mid-June to early July, around the rainy season. A recommended spot to view a cluster of yamaboshi is a location called "Fukoshi."
Travel by car is necessary, but it is located about 20 minutes by heading towards Shimabara from the hot springs town and proceeding along the prefectural route 385 towards Tahira port. The stunning cluster of yamaboshi spreading under the bridge steals the attention of passing drivers and bus tour customers during this season.
Unzen in summer. Summer resort.
The average temperature of Unzen in summer (at an altitude of about 700 meters) is 24-25℃, which is nearly the same as Sapporo, Hokkaido. Since the Meiji and Taisho periods, many foreigners have visited Unzen for summer vacations, and it was like a foreign town. Therefore, the proprietress of the inns at the time could speak English and Russian.
