Located on the western side of the Shimabara Peninsula, Obama Onsen is a neutral "salt spring" with high temperatures (110 degrees Celsius). In contrast, Unzen Onsen in the central area is an acidic "sulfur spring" at approximately 98 degrees Celsius, and Shimabara Onsen (maximum 41 degrees Celsius) is a "sodium bicarbonate spring."
The variations in these spring qualities are a result of the process where volcanic emissions, the source of hot springs, rise diagonally from the magma reservoir beneath Chijiwa Bay towards the east. This process causes easily soluble components to gradually leach into the underground water.
The high-temperature, high-pressure gas generated from this magma reservoir rises through fissures in the bedrock, comes into contact with underground water, and dissolves components from the rocks, forming hot spring water. Among these, the gas produced by the boiling of hot water becomes steam, resulting in fumaroles.
