「Chion-do」
After ascending a mountain trail for about 20 minutes from the Issai-kyō Hall, when you make a left turn at the junction, you will see a large rock wall. A little further ahead, there is a tunnel through a massive stone, and upon passing through it, you will arrive at the Chiondō. Chiondō was founded by the venerable nun Toyoda Kayo, who is considered the revitalizer of the temple. At that time, in an area about the size of three tatami mats amidst the dizzying cliffs, a shelter was constructed to protect from rain and dew, where she practiced and received spiritual inspiration. It is said that she devoted herself to the salvation of sentient beings. She passed away at the age of 88 in the 44th year of the Shōwa era (1969).Passing through structures like this massive stone is called "taidō meguri," and it can be seen in many sacred sites. It involves entering the womb of Buddha, purifying oneself, and seeking peace of mind.
