Mt. Benten is said to be the lowest naturally formed mountain in Japan. Its height is 6.1m above sea level, which is higher than even a two-story house.
In fact, it is said that there are two other low mountains in Japan other than Mt. Benten, but since the Edo period, there have only been artificially created mountains, and Mt. Benten is said to be the lowest natural mountain in Japan. .
There is also a legend that in the late Heian period, Minamoto no Yoshitsune landed on Komatsushima in 1185 and sent his army over this mountain to Dan-no-ura. It also has a great connection to Japanese history.
Long ago, this area was covered by the sea, and Mt. Benten was one of the small islands floating in the sea. It is said that after that, as the sea water receded due to climate change, the small island took on its current shape.
Because it was an island floating on the sea, the guardian deity of the sea, Ichikishima no Himemikoto, is enshrined in Benzaiten as its main deity.
This shrine is also believed to be a shrine of success and good luck, as it has the meaning of ``the top of the mountain from which there is no place below which to start.''
